My Public Service Hero: William Booth

We remember William Booth because he founded the Salvation Army. William Booth was born in Sneinton, Nottingham, England. In 1865, William Booth was in the East End of London preaching where people were very poor and had little to eat. He realized he needed to help in any way he could. He opened the Christian Revival Society with his wife Catherine to help the needy in London. Slowly, the Christian mission began to grow with help from George Scott Railton and Booth’s wife. Sometimes things weren’t always good. They faced a great deal of opposition especially from the alcohol-selling industry. Also, Booth would come home at night haggard with fatigue because he worked so tirelessly. He really wanted to help the homeless so they could have shelter and aid. Now, the Salvation Army is an international movement, present in 100 countries. His story can teach us all that we can do anything we set our minds to and that anything is possible.

Day of Service: Johnson Concern & Care Center

On Martin Luther King Day, the Young Leaders Program at Young Scholars went to Ms. Johnson's house to try to clean up her care center. Ms. Johnson has been giving to the needy for over 30 years at her house, the Johnson Concern and Care Center in Philadelphia.

At first, the house was a mess, but Young Leaders came to help out. I went with my brother Dominiq, my friend Teylor, the leaders: Mr. Barnes and Ms .Kenuk.  Also, my uncle was there and lots of other people who signed up for the Martin Luther King Day of Service. The main reason  we went there was because we all wanted to help out Mrs. Johnson.

I helped fold up clothes, took out some trash, and I put lots of shoes in a bag. The best lesson to learn from the trip is that "the world does not revolve around you" and helping out is important. The best moment of the day was helping out Mrs. Johnson out with everything.

We can all do community service, help out at a homeless shelter, or give to the poor.
